About the Game Boy Advance

The third generation of the Game Boy family, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) featured a full-colour screen and backwards compatibility with its predecessors - the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. It was redesigned two years after its 2001 release to include a rechargeable battery, foldable clamshell design and a backlight (no more light attachments or torches to play late at night!), which has been a part of Nintendo’s handheld systems ever since.

The GBA could also be connected to the Nintendo GameCube through a special link cable and be used as a controller. Some games (such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker) used the GBA’s capabilities to show map screens or hidden items, and others (for instance, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles) required a GBA to be connected for each person in multiplayer mode.

The Game Boy Advance series (including the GBA SP and the Game Boy Micro) ended up selling over 81 million units until it was succeeded by the Nintendo DS in 2004. Some GBA titles can be found on the Wii U Virtual Console service, including Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Fire Emblem.
