About the Nintendo 3DS

The first handheld system to make use of stereoscopic 3D (so you won’t need 3D glasses!)*, the Nintendo 3DS was released in 2011. It’s seen a few revisions since then, with the 3DS XL (a larger version of the original, with bigger screens) and the 2DS (which does away with the 3D effect and the folding clamshell design of the original).

The latest version is the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL, which feature larger screens and extra control options including extra buttons and a mini-joystick, as well as an inbuilt NFC reader that is compatible with Nintendo’s new amiibo figures. The New Nintendo 3DS also features swappable covers which can be mixed and matched to suit each individual player. Some games are only compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS – be sure to check the case carefully (or ask us for help) before you buy!

Every 3DS has access to the Nintendo eShop, allowing players to download digital versions of newly-released games (for those who prefer not to lug around a box of cartridges) as well as indie games and Virtual Console titles from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Notable games for the 3DS include Fire Emblem: Awakening, Super Mario 3D Land, Bravely Default, Pokemon X and Y, Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. (We also sell Points Cards for purchasing games from the Nintendo eShop!)

* Please note that Nintendo does not recommend use of the 3DS’ 3D function for children aged six and younger – they recommend parents disable this function using the parental settings of the console, or using the Nintendo 2DS instead, which does not feature 3D capabilities.
