About the PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita is Sony’s second portable, released in Australia in 2012. Featuring a five-inch touch screen on the front and touch pads on the back, the Vita also has a camera at the front and the back of the device as well as the Sixaxis gyroscope/accelerometer system (the same system used in the PS3 controller). Some Vitas allow for a phone SIM card to be plugged into the unit – although the Vita can’t make phone calls, it can use the data plan on the SIM card to access the Internet and play games online.

Like the PS3 and PS4, the Vita can also access the PlayStation Store to purchase and download games, apps and videos – perfect for those long car trips! (We sell PSN credit too!)

Sony has also released a non-portable version of the console named the PlayStation TV (not to be confused with the PlayTV software for PS3), which allows many Vita games to be played on a television, and even streamed using the PS4’s Remote Play feature. Not all Vita games are compatible with the PlayStation TV due to the control requirements (some need the motion sensing ability of the Vita, and others require the camera or microphone) so be aware of this when buying a Vita game!

The Vita has struggled in the market so far, although Sony still supports it – in its first year it was still being outsold by its predecessor the PSP, and its most recent sales sit at over four million, compared to over 53 million sales of the Nintendo 3DS.
