About the Game Boy Color

The Game Boy Color (GBC) was released in 1998, taking advantage of its backwards-compatibility (the first time a handheld system could do so) and the Game Boy’s vast range of games to make the system successful.

The screen wasn’t fully-coloured (that would come later, in the Game Boy Advance), but the GBC could even display the original Game Boy’s black-and-white titles with a selection of colours (which could be changed with a button combination when first turning on the system).

The GBC was the home of many successful games, including its best-sellers (Pokémon Gold and Silver), and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, both of which could be linked to the other title through cables or passwords to unlock extras and bonuses.

The Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console features several Game Boy Color games, including The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and Mario Tennis.
